The challenges of today – the aftermaths of the global pandemic, growing societal divisions, economic and political uncertainty, climate change, and war – in the midst of Europe but also in other parts of the world – continue to strain individuals and societies world-wide. The world is facing an unprecedented rise of depression, suicide and mental health issues. According to the WHO World Mental Health report published in June 2022, depression and anxiety rose by 25% in the first year of the pandemic, bringing the number of people living with a mental disorder to nearly one billion people.

To recognize outstanding sustainable contributions in the sports arena and beyond, the World Forum for Ethics in Business since 2014 honors outstanding organizations and individuals with the Ethics in Sports Award. Isolation, fear, insecurity, economic turmoil, loss of loved ones and a feeling of powerlessness have determined the lives of citizens globally. Levels of stress and anxiety have risen substantially, including among children, young people and healthcare workers. Substance and alcohol dependency are expected to rise, while self-harm and suicide rates among at risk individuals are also expected to increase. The United Nations officially warned of a sharp rise in mental health problems as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

United Nations Organizations in Bonn, Germany hosted WFEB President Rajita Kulkarni in a TV-style talk called ‘7 minutes of discussion’ at the “Global Festival of Ideas for Sustainable Development”. Rajita Kulkarni discussed the role of the private sector in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Tauni Lanier, Executive Director of IMPACT 2030. The questions focused on private sector led coalitions to achieve Agenda 2030. Impact investment and human capital investments, and activating corporations and corporate workers to take action to achieve the SDGs.

With the first conference held in Mexico on 6th December 2016, WFEB launched their activities in the Latin America region. The event held in Mexico City was inaugurated and attended by WFEB Founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and the top business leaders of Mexico. International Leadership Symposium on Ethics in Business’ was conducted for the first time in United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, by World Forum in Ethics in Business on July 1, 2013

Many people ask themselves: “When is this crisis over?”. “Which crisis?”, is my first response to this. For a long time we believed that the crisis which hit us in 2008 was a financial crisis, with its origin in banks lending providing sub prime mortgages, securitising ‘toxic assets’ and spreading the crisis throughout our economy. And thus we all blamed the banks. At a later stage we started to call it “an economic crisis”, then afterwards it became the Eurocrisis and so on.

Corruption charges such as that on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, business scandals such as the Horsemeat scandal spread across Europe and the recent happenings in Cyprus have brought to the forefront once again issues that have been a concern for the world in general for a long time. What has been surprising is that despite global attention on the issue of ethics post the financial meltdown in 2008-09, these incidents keep coming up with increasing regularity. There are a couple of questions that arise from this negative trend: Who should take the blame for such misdemeanours? Who can get the ethical bandwagon back on the road? In my view, the answer for both the concerns is the same: leaders.

How to prevent future crisis? What can we learn from today’s situation? Important questions for Slovenian and also world economy. We were searching for the answers to those questions at the conference Ethics in Business and Leadership, “The Time is Right, Now!”, organized by World Forum for Ethics in Business in cooperation with Fokus 2031.

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, attended the conference Ethics in Business and Leadership – “The Time is Right, Now!” at the invitation of the World Forum for Ethics in Business and the think-tank Fokus 2031. The conference was organised by the IEDC – Bled School of Management; it originates from the International Symposium on Ethics in Business, an annual event which brings together prominent leaders from business, politics, academia, civil society and faith-based organisations at the European Parliament.

The World Forum for Ethics in Business (WFEB) held its international leadership symposium on business ethics in the European Parliament in Brussels on 30 November. The symposium, which was entitled Rethinking Capitalism, brought together top business leaders and political figures to discuss the strengthening of human values and ethics in the business world, and how to shift the debate from advocacy to action.

Held in cooperation with its strategic partners The World Bank Institute, International Association for Human Values and the Earth Charter, WFEB’s conference brought together stakeholders from across all sectors (business,politics, academics, institutions, media, inter-faith leaders) to debate on the burning topic of ‘Rethinking Capitalism’.

Rethinking Capitalism is essential today. In these times of economic recession, people are losing faith in the economic system. It is an earnest need of our time to re-instill the faith in our current system otherwise it will lead to anarchy. To re-establish faith and trust in the economic system, we need a holistic moral and ethical revival including all the four essential pillars of society: the Government Institutions, Private and Civil Society Organizations, Faith Based Organizations and the Media. We need to foster a coordinated effort amongst these stakeholders. If any one of these pillars collapses, the others also become disabled.

Individual ethics are not enough to change the culture of global corruption, despite their obvious force for good in modern business, instead, business organisations have to provide a clear ethical context for companies to operate within, a leading legal personality has told New Europe.
